Playing the Japanese Taiko Drum with it's cavernous thumping sound may not be the greatest way to endear yourself to your neighbours, but it is nevertheless a wonderful instrument, loud, proud and unashamed.
A taiko performance provokes a reaction akin to that of taking a roller coaster ride. The aggressive drumming creates thuds which resonate deep in the chest instilling a sense of danger and impending doom. At the same time, the rhythmic pounding speaks to our ancestral past, edging the listener towards a hypnotic trance and a sense of unity with those around you. Watch the video until the end to see what I mean.
The performance by Masayuki Murashita, held at NARA Visitor Center & Inn on January 8th also featured the shamisen and bamboo flute, but the taiko drum was the undoubted highlight and several audience members were lucky enough to have a bash for themselves and join Masayuki in a jam session.
The NARA Visitor Center & Inn holds free events all through out the week, including live
performances. Check their events page for details.
